This past weekend, I finally visited a place that's been on my radar for a while - Mr. Holmes Bakehouse. Hearing others say things like 'it's the next b. patisserie' made me set my expectations pretty high, but let's be clear, this is not your typical patisserie and certainly not the next b. patisserie - Mr. Holmes is simply in a category of it's own.

The bakehouse does indeed serve up some classics, like croissants and (melt-in-your-mouth delicious) apricot tarts, but what stands our is their inventive updates on traditional pastries. When you walk through their door, you know you're in for something unique. The shop greets you with a cute floor that was just made for Instagram and a bright pink neon sign reading "I got baked in San Francisco" on the wall. Sadly, I was a little too late to try a 'Cruffin' (croissant/muffin hybrids that apparently sell out really quickly), but I did try the aforementioned apricot tart, a banana creme filled donut (one of the more tame flavors that they serve up), a chocolate chip cookie, and a pain au chocolate.

I think if you're in the mood for a unique treat (sushi croissants, anyone?) or at least a cute shot for your Instagram feed, definitely check out Mr. Holmes (and come early for the best selection!). But if, like me, you prefer more traditional pastries and cozier spot to enjoy them, I'd stick to b. patisserie or Tartine. I will say though, I'll be back to Mr. Holmes Bakehouse for another one of those apricot tarts! So dreamy.

I'd love to know - does anyone have any other contenders for the title of 'the next b. patisserie?'

Until next time,

- B
