I may be biased, but I think no other city does Christmas quite like London. Everywhere you turn in the capitol is dressed up—from grand hotel facades to townhouse front doors. When you stumble upon some of these spots, you can’t help but smile and get excited for the coming season. Yes, it can be stressful and hectic, but Christmas in London might also just be the most wonderful time of year.
It’s always a treat when my Cambridge-based friend and blogger extraordinaire, Briony, comes down to London and last week we decided to make a half day of seeing some of our favorite spots. Her’s being Claridge’s, mine being Fortnum and Mason, and of course you can never pass up Annabel’s extravagant displays without taking a few photos.
It’s always a fun time with Briony and how can it not be when you’re touring around London during the holidays? Claridge’s is one of London’s most iconic hotels and each year they reveal a special Christmas tree in their lobby, but the exteriors are just as special. Decorated with greenery, lights and oversized stars, it was classic Christmas.
Next up, en route to Fortnum’s, was Annabel’s. This private members club is in the heart of Mayfair and seems to outdo itself each season when it comes to decor. Earlier in the year, they covered their entire facade in pink and red faux flowers for spring. But I think they’ve topped that with a massive triangle of greenery covered in what must be thousands of baubles. Those who are lucky enough to be members enter underneath two giant candy canes that look straight out of candy land (or Elf).
Finally it was time for my favorite—Fortnum and Mason. This place holds a special spot in my heart as I came here for tea the very first time I came to London, almost 15 years ago. Their display might not be as over-the-top as the others, but I love how each of their windows are all so beautiful (and all different). It’s worth taking a look at them all.
And inside the store, you’ll find the most incredible Christmas cookies, biscuits, tea and so much more. It’s my go-to spot for those difficult-to-shop-for people. And I’ll always leave with something for myself too!
As an antidote to the red and green all over, we decided to coordinate in pink and black for non-traditional, but still very much festive, looks. Sometimes it’s nice being a bit bright and bold, and what better time to get decked out than the holidays?
I was in love with Briony’s coat. With it’s nod to the late fifties in the form of a pink faux fur collar and bejeweled buttons, it looks like a piece you’d see on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And this marvelous coat also comes in black—I’m very tempted to snag it!
I shared these polka dot trousers on stories a while back. They were a bit of an impulse purchase, but the blush pink dots just put a smile on my face and I love how they pair with my pink coat. I’d been eyeing this from the Atlantic Pacific x Halogen collaboration and I’m so happy I was able to get it. It’s a classic shape in a fun color and I know I’ll be wearing it all year long—won’t it look so lovely over a patterned dress come spring?
After finishing our photos, we treated ourself to some tea and treats at Ladurée to warm up and catch up. I love that this time of year brings people together, whether it’s friends meeting up to see London’s lights or family gathering for Christmas dinner. The decorations are just a bonus, I think.
Until next time,
Brenda
